Bruegel drawing

What

Animated gif: The RGB rendering represents the drawing as it appears to the human eye (based on albedo values). With the shaded rendering the topography of the surface can be studied. In this case, it visualizes the tracing lines (very shallow indentations in the paper) made by a stylus used by the engraver to transfer Bruegel’s design from the paper version onto the copper plates to produce prints. No other visualization technique documents this feature with the same success rate. For more results with this dataset see [Archiving2018].

Static compilation: Three manners in which the interactive data can be generated are fading into each other. These visualisations make it possible to study the surface and/or automatically simplify the relief. Left: Standard RGB rendering, as it appears to the human eye (based on the albedo values); Middle: Automated drawing or sketch1 rendering, the steep variations in the surface are accentuated in shades of grey; Right: Normal mapping, the color variations conceal information on the surface orientations.

Cuneiform tablet

What

Animated gif: The interactive relighting of the RGB rendering of the surface of a cuneiform tablet virtually simulates the interaction how light casts on the relief when a reader of the document identifies the scribal characters and the seal impression’s iconography. Secondly, by excluding the RGB texture map (‘shaded’ rendering) the relief during virtual relighting appears even more profound. A third added value of single-camera multi-light reflectance is the ability to automatically accentuate particular relief features. In this case, the ‘sketch1’ rendering makes the cuneiform signs impressed downwards in the clay to appear in black; and the ‘sketch2’ rendering differentiates the seal impression which protrudes on top of the main surface. Static compilation: To the left the RGB rendering (based on the obtained albedo values) represents the drawing as it appears to the human eye; to the right the shaded rendering reveals the smallest unevennesses on the topography of the surface. Rijmbijbel illumination

What

Static images: By comparing the RGB rendering to the left (how the object appears to the human eye) with the rendering based on the reflections from the 850nm infrared light sources (in the middle), it can be observed that the faces of the figures in the illumination have been repainted at a certain moment in time. The false color rendering (to the right, combination of the infrared, red and green albedo responses: IRG) shows evidence different materials were used for this restoration when these additives are compared to the original pigments and inks. Egyptian coffin

What

Static compilation: Combination of renderings presenting the abilities of multispectral multi-light reflectance datasets. The surface integrity of this polychromic coffin is greatly affected/damaged and layers of original deteriorated varnish obscure the original design of the depictions. The RGB color renderings are on the left alternated with a texture less ‘shaded’ rendering which reveals the current surface condition of the paint and underlying gypsum layers. More to the right, an infrared rendering (based on the spectral albedo values obtained in the IR, 850nm) provides better insights on the polychromic depictions.

Static compilation: The relief (surface orientations based on the normal map) of the seal can be accentuated or simplified into a an automated white/black rendering; rapid changes in the surface orientations between pixels receive a dark shade of grey; white for neighboring pixels without difference in surface orientation (= sketch 1 rendering).
